What it is
On the online check-in form, each guest can tap Scan document and point
their phone camera at the two or three lines of small capital letters and
< symbols at the bottom of their ID card or passport. These are the
machine-readable lines (MRZ). Checkinea reads them and fills in the guest's
name, document type and number (plus the support number for a DNI or TIE),
date of birth, sex and nationality.
Guests who prefer it can tap Use a photo instead and choose a picture of the document, or type everything by hand.
Nothing to set up
Scanning is on for every property. There is no setting to turn on and nothing to send to your guests: the button appears on each traveler's card in the check-in form.
Which documents work
Any document with machine-readable lines:
- Spanish DNI (on the back)
- TIE and other residence cards
- Passports (on the photo page)
- ID cards from other countries
Driving licences have no such lines, so guests still type those details. The address is also typed, because it is not in the machine-readable lines.
What the guest sees
The scan fills the fields and highlights the ones it changed. The guest then reviews them and saves as usual. The machine-readable lines have no accents (MUÑOZ is printed as MUNOZ), so the name fields carry a reminder to check the spelling and accents.
Privacy
Scanning happens entirely on the guest's phone. The image is never uploaded or stored. Only the details the guest saves in the form reach you, the same as when they type them.
If the scan does not work
Glare on a laminated passport is the most common cause. Guests can tilt the document, move it away from direct light, or use the photo option, which uses the phone's own camera app. Typing the details by hand is always available.
